Common Name: American Chestnut
Family: Beech (Fagaceae)
Genus: Castanea
Species: dentata
Observer(s): Noah Charney
Notes: This sapling is growing on the South side of the hill between Wayside Ct. and Rolling Fork. The chestnut blight kills off the above-ground parts of most Chestnuts before they get very big; leaving them to resprout from the roots over and over again as this one has. This is a rare species and it would be wonderful if someone found a mature American Chestnut growing in the woods around here; so keep your eyes open!
