Common Name: Pileated Woodpecker
Family: Woodpeckers (Picidae)
Genus: Dryocopus
Species: pileatus
Observer(s): Jane Bibring; Sharon Charney
Notes: The pileated woodpecker in my photograph is a female (all the ones Jane has seen are female maybe the same one over many years. In females the red head does not extend all the way o the beak and they don't have red cheek stripes.) Note how the male on the right is using his specialized woodpecker tail feathers to brace himself.
